Observations by SPACE in INDIA

Narender Parasher ( Indian Embassy, Beijing )

It was rather a refreshing experience for us here to meet young students, and see their enthusiasm in learning about new things. We feel good to be able to support endevours of our people in promotion of their interests in various fields, that is the whole objective of setting up offices like this abroad,to facilitate our own countrymen. Hope to join your team again in future.

Sheridan Williams ( Rocket Scientist )

You are very privileged to be alive for the last transit of Venus in your lifetimes. I saw the last transit of Venus in 2004 and can assure you that it is wonderful to watch an event that had not been seen by anyone currently alive! Plan it well, because you won't get another chance. Try and time the ingress and egress as these are very difficult to time indeed because of the "black drop" effect. Also look in wonder that you are witnessing an event that proves that planets go round the Sun. Cast superstitions to the wind. Finally, be very careful how you view as the Sun as is very dangerous; use the right equipment guided by experts. Good luck and I wish I could
be with you.

Many of you will have been very young in 2004 and this too will be a once in a lifetim event for you. Many people live their lives in between these events and never have the opportunity to see.
It is so much more than a black dot on the Sun. It is a chance to see orbital mechanics in real time, to ponder the history of transits and the role they played in world exploration.

One final challenge to you. The next total solar eclipse to cross India does so in 22 years time on March 20, 2034. I challenge you to take a moment to think like I did, how you will live your life, what our world will be like then and what you will contribute to it. When the event comes around, use it to remind you to think back and compare what you imagine now to reality in 22 years time.
